Don learned how to play fiddle as a teen, taking lessons from Bill Haney, a master entertainer and one of the original “Tennessee Cut-Ups”. Bill taught him not only how to play but also dynamics of developing his own style. Don is one of three original Carolina Rebels, and along with Hank and Tom helped mold the direction the band would take on a successful journey that has lasted over twenty years.
Don has a deep bass voice that is put to good use on the gospel quartets. Not having a “high-pitched” bluegrass voice, he has to work with what he has and his smooth lead vocals are well used on songs by Ray Price, Jim Reeves, and other male artists from the 50’s and 60’s. Don also enjoys acting as the bands Master of Ceremonies.
Don lives in Columbia with his wife Kelly and has two daughters
